I guess I should post otherwise they'll delete my account. I'm still alive. Texas is hot. School is good. Only 18 more months until I finish my degree.

07:22 pm - running is good
I went for another run today, 3 miles at 9 minutes each. Given that two weeks ago I was doing 3 miles at 12-13 minutes each, I think that's quite an improvement. Still not near my cross country days in high school of 7 minute miles, but I'll get there.
My brother's coming to town this week, that'll be fun - finally have someone to run with. Although I admit my iPod is pretty good company and the Nike+ thing is really sweet! It tracks my pace for me, so I can take pride that my split times were all around 9 minutes for the run instead of the speed up, slow down stuff that I was doing at the beginning of my training. Planning to do some of these 5k philanthropy runs as they come along. Sadly the Jingle Bell run for arthritis isn't happening in Houston. But I'll do all the ones I can. And then was planning on next summer doing a mini-marathon.
And yes Adam and Ben, I know I'm old.

Grad school, it seemed better than getting a real job.

Tonight I went to Rice for my usual 3 miles run. I got there, and it started pouring down rain. Took that as a sign that it wasn't meant to be and went home. Now I'm sitting on the couch eating cookies and the rain has just about stopped.

I can only hope it works some day...
This week has made me realize just how much I hate Microsoft Access. Why would anyone build something in Access? MySQL is much easier and it's documentation is actually correct! Oh and pulling databases from a web page is something that makes sense instead of having a database on ONE computer that only ONE person can access.

11:46 pm - oh SPSS
SPSS and I have a love-hate relationship. I hate it... and they love how I spend money on it. Why do I hate it you might ask. Well even if you didn't - you can keep reading for an explanation. SPSS is rarely updated when it needs to be, particularly for the mac, my platform of choice.

I look at you, you bite your tongue
I dont know why or where im coming from
And in my head im close to you
We're in the rain still searching for the sun
You think that I wanna run and hide
I'll keep it all locked up inside
I just want you to find me
I'm not lost, I'm not lost, Just undiscovered
We're never alone we're all the same as each other
You see the look thats on my face
You might think im out of place
Im not lost, no no, just undiscovered
Well the time it takes to know someone
It all can change before you know its gone
So close your eyes and feel the way
I'm with you now believe theres nothing wrong
You think that I wanna run and hide
I'll keep it all locked up inside
I just want you to find me
I'm not lost, Im not lost, Just undiscovered
We're never alone we're all the same as each other
You see the look thats on my face you might think im out of place
I'm not lost, no no, just undiscovered
08:07 pm - greedy video studios
Why is it that movie studios typically do multiple runs of a DVD? Originally they may have the regular edition and the special edition. A few months later they come out with the extended special edition. Then a year later it might be the unrated extended special collectors edition. The only reason they do this is in hopes that people will buy the special extended editions even though they already own the original.
The horrible part is that you have no way of knowing if there will be a special extended unrated edition with extra features and a ticket to meet your favorite supermodel released in your lifetime.

12:26 pm - silly stats tests
Today I had my first stats test. Should get the results tonight or tomorrow. I found that a lot of the questions were intentionally written to be tricky. Silly sample questions below:
Variance is to standard deviation as:
a. Area is to length
b. a box is to surface
c. large is to small
d. none of the above
To increase power, the researcher may:
a. decrease alpha
b. increase beta
c. modify the alternative hypothesis
d. do a linear transform on the data
The info she gave us just prior to handing out the test was that a 37% was a B- last year. On the amusing side of it - I had to purchase my own scantron sheet! I had to go to the bookstore and pay $0.18 for one! We've gotta start a grad student union!
